What is a DSEAR Zone?

In the next few minutes we aim to give you a much better understanding of the DSEAR zones.

A DSEAR zone is a hazardous area where dangerous substances may create an explosive atmosphere. Zones are defined in the UK by the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).

DSEAR zones are classified based on the probability and frequency of an explosive atmosphere:

DSEAR Zones

Zone 0: The area where an explosive atmosphere is present continuously, frequently, or for long periods of time is the site of the explosive environment.
Zone 1: A place where an explosive atmosphere is likely to form occasionally during normal operation is expected.
Zone 2: An area where an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur during normal operation but where it occurs will last only for a short time.

Zones cover dangerous gases, vapours and mists. Similar zones exist for combustible dust.

Identifying DSEAR zones has the following purposes:

Assess and manage the risks of hazardous substances.
Seek adequate safety precautions to protect people, equipment and the environment.
Identify the correct design, installation and maintenance of equipment in these areas.
Set out training and competence requirements for personnel working in these zones.

DSEAR zones provide one component of hazardous area classification that helps employers meet regulations and provide a safe work environment.

By identifying such zones companies can take necessary steps like using specialised equipment, setting up procedures and training to reduce the risks of working with dangerous substances.

DSEAR zones need to be reviewed and reassessed regularly, especially where substances or work practices change. It is this ongoing process that keeps the work area safe and compliant with DSEAR regulations.
