Situation: We were approached by a research and development business creating hydrogen fuel cells. The new technology posed some unique challenges, and the client needed a thorough evaluation of the risk of hydrogen formation and potential explosive atmospheres at their new site.
Task: Our task was to conduct a DSEAR risk assessment and undertake a full review of the client’s processes and systems. The objective was to determine the level of risk, assess their requirements for compliance, and evaluate their emergency preparedness and response.
Action: We visited the existing facility to research and understand the technologies and substances involved. This allowed us to determine the risks posed by the hydrogen formation and assess the client’s current level of compliance.
We also conducted a DSEAR assessment of the new proposed site to make sure all requirements for compliance were considered in the design project. This helped the client understand the necessary design requirements and ensure they would be compliant from day one.
Finally, we conducted a commissioning site assessment to ensure all installations were up to standards and that the new facility met all DSEAR compliance requirements.
Result: From the assessment, we found some additional steps that needed to be taken, such as updating working procedures, providing some extra training for employees, upgrading their emergency preparedness plan, and managing contractors better. To make sure the company had the best support, we created a plan that addressed these requirements and provided on-site support, working with managers and training employees.
Our work was completed within a fast time frame and at a reasonable cost. The cost of the initial DSEAR risk assessment was £1800 and the site investigation was an additional £700. And we continued to work with the company on a consultancy basis to ensure their compliance and safety standards were met. Our goal was to help them achieve a safe and compliant working environment, and we provided support every step of the way.
