When people hear the term DSEAR Assessment, it can sound technical and a little daunting. In this blog we wanted to answer the question, What does a DSEAR assessment entail? In reality, it’s a straightforward process designed to make sure your workplace is safe when it comes to handling dangerous substances. At Orbis Environmental, we carry out DSEAR assessments across all kinds of industries, and the first question we always ask is whether the site uses or stores hazardous materials. This could be anything from natural gas mains, which almost every site has, to solvents, fuels, or chemicals. The thresholds for when DSEAR applies are often lower than most people expect, so even small amounts can trigger the need for an assessment.
The process usually begins with a conversation. We’ll ask about the substances on site, how much is being stored, and how they’re used day to day. Are they just kept in tanks for fuelling machinery, or are they decanted, poured, mixed, or pumped through pipework? These details help us understand how complex the risks might be, and it also gives you a clear idea of what the assessment will involve and the likely cost.
From there, we’ll arrange a visit to the site. Most facilities only take a day to cover, sometimes two for larger or more complex operations. We’ll meet with the responsible person, take a walk around, and gather as much information as possible about how hazardous substances are stored and managed. We’ll look at things like spill procedures, ignition sources, fire precautions, evacuation points, and ventilation, which often plays a key role in reducing risks. The aim isn’t to catch anyone out but to understand how your site operates in practice so we can provide practical advice.
Once the visit is complete, we take all of the information back and benchmark it against British Standards and Energy Institute guidance. The main outcome of this work is what’s known as a hazardous area classification, which identifies which areas of your site could present a risk, how far that risk extends, and what controls are needed to keep people safe. All of this is then pulled together into a clear and practical report that explains the risks we’ve identified and the measures you can take to reduce or eliminate them.
Sometimes an assessment takes place before a site is even built. If you’re in the design stage of a project, adding new storage tanks, or introducing new chemicals, we can assess risks based on drawings and plans. This is often the best time to get advice, as it allows the right safety measures, such as ventilation, to be built in from the start rather than added later.
